JUST IN: ‘Protest in W’aria over mine shafts closure’

Municipality confirms early morning protest over residents' dissatisfaction with the closure of mine shafts.

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) confirmed the protest in Westonaria this morning (18 September), but said the roads that were affected have been cleared.

Tshidiso Thlaripe, RWCLM spokesperson said the reason for the protest was the residents’ dissatisfaction with the closure of mine shafts in the area.

You may recall that the mines have closed quite a number of shafts, so this culminated in a high unemployment rate in the area.

“Now people have organised themselves to plead with the mine management that the shafts be reopened so that they could be hired,” Thlaripe said.

Sergeant Audrey Sefara, Westonaria Police spokesperson added that police have diffused the situation but are monitoring the area.

Meanwhile, the Herald received a video of this morning’s unrest, showing smoke from the burning tyres and motorists turning around to use alternative routes.
