It’s #ThrowbackThursday and the Herald went back in time to 11 September 1987. In this edition, the Herald reported that drugs were becoming a menace on the West Rand.
For this week’s edition, we spoke to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, to find out whether drugs or substance abuse is behind some of the modern-day crimes.
Lefakane said drugs remain one of the biggest factors leading to various crimes such as break-ins, robberies and petty theft.
“Our police station had to establish a designated drug unit to eradicate this problem, and we are proud to say that on daily basis, we arrest more than 30 suspects of crimes that are drug-related.”
She said some of the offences are committed mostly because users are desperate and need to make a quick buck to get their next fix.
