The Herald goes back, way back, to 4 September 1987 for this week’s #ThrowbackThursday.
Enrique Bhana from Women Against Women Abuse (WAWA) said suicide has become a problem among the youth.
It’s #ThrowbackThursday and the Herald went back in time to the 4 September 1987 edition in which we published a worrying story about suicide.
The Herald reported back then that insecurity brought about by the current political situation had been linked to the escalating number of family killings and suicides reported in the Republic. According to a spokesperson for Life Line West Rand, it is possible that pride prevented many victims of the recession from reaching out for the life-saving help which is available for the cost of a telephone call.
LifeLine pleaded: ‘Don’t swallow those pills, or pull that trigger, PLEASE! Telephone LifeLine and talk to one of their counsellors. You might find a new lease on life’.
On Thursday, 5 September 2019, we caught up with Enrique Bhana from Women Against Women Abuse (WAWA) who said suicide has evolved among youngsters, but provided details of where they can find help.
We at WAWA also assist in these matters, but whenever a client does not feel comfortable speaking to us personally, we direct them to other agencies for help,” Bhana said.
