Staff members at Avante Primary School are concerned about safety at their school, after 26 sections of palisade fencing were stolen last month, leaving the school’s premises exposed to more criminal elements.
Deputy principal of the school, Reginah Marule, said the situation does not only pose a danger to the learners – the staff are also endangered, and some of the school’s equipment is exposed to the risk of theft.
“We are very concerned about our learners who play on the nearby field during breaks – something might happen to them. This is not right and the problem needs to be solved immediately,” she added.
Victor Padime, deputy chairman of the School Governing Body (SGB), said the remaining sections of the palisade fencing have had to be removed and be kept in a safe place to avoid more losses.
“We are planning to get concrete fencing, although it is expensive. It will however not be easy to steal, as it is too heavy to carry away easily,” Padime said.
He added that over a period of two weeks in August, the palisades were removed with what look liked a saw. He went on to say that steps are being taken to approach the school’s district for funds to replace the fence.
Another deputy principal from the school, Sam Jacobs, said although a case has been opened, the police have not yet provided any feedback.
