UPDATE: Licensing Department closed till further notice

Randfontein residents have been advised to do their business at other licensing departments and post offices due to a meeting between strikers and management.

Fears that service delivery by the municipality will be compromised by unhappy employees going on strike are slowly becoming a reality as the Licensing Department has been closed for the time being.

Although the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has denied that its employees are back on strike, Kenny Mampondo, chief of the Rand West City Traffic Department, has confirmed that the Licensing Department is closed until further notice.

“The Department is closed for the time being. We advise residents to do business, specifically renewal of drivers licences, at out sister departments in Mogale City or Merafong and payments for their licence discs at post offices,” Mampondo said on Tuesday morning.

According to Tshidiso Thlaripe, RWCLM spokesperson, “Employees of RWCLM along with the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) are currently in a meeting with management at the local labour forum to discuss the issue of the grading of the municipality and address concerns. As soon as we get more information about their discussions, we will update you.”

Thlaripe added the municipality also stands by its statement made last Friday that the municipal workers’ strike has been suspended indefinitely.

Mampondo concluded, “We are hopeful that the problem will be resolved. today.”

The current situation at the municipality has clearly affected service delivery as the Herald has received many complaints about refuse collection, the licensing department and many other issues from residents.
