JUST IN: Municipality confirms – employees on strike

Dingane Lebetsa, chairperson of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) in the West Rand region confirmed that workers have downed tools as a result of a payment dispute with the municipality.

“After the two municipalities (the former Westonaria and Randfontein municipalities) merged in 2016, we have given management ample time to sort out the issue of salaries, because we had information that we are paid according to the Grade 6 salary scale, meaning we have been underpaid,” Lebetsa said.

He added that workers have demanded that the salaries structure be changed according to South African Local Government Association (Salga) regulations.

Lethlogonolo Makgamathe, shop steward of Samwu said, “The reason why this issue is unresolved today, is the arrogance of the municipal manager. We are tired of his conduct and we demand his removal with immediate effect.”

According to Tshidiso Thlaripe, RWCLM spokesperson, this will affect all departments of the municipality.

Makgamathe added that if these issues are not addressed, service delivery by the municipality will be compromised.

Thlaripe said efforts are being made by the municipality to resolve the issues raised by the union.
