More shebeens in Rand West shut down

Two shebeens were closed down and more than R15 000 worth of fines issued as police again raided illegal shebeens, this time in Westonaria and Bekkersdal.

Police continued to put pressure on the illegal liquor business in Rand West City and during the weekend, they conducted another major O kae Molao operation.

Two shebeens were closed down, more than R15 000 worth of fines were issued, several people were arrested and liquor was confiscated as a result.

The operation, which was led by two brigadiers, was held by policewomen in the West Rand District together with members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF), Rural Safety, patrollers and members from the Gauteng Liquor Board from 6pm on Friday, 16 August.

A total of 14 shebeens were visited and 1 250 patrons were also searched.

According to Sergeant Audrey Sefara, Westonaria Police spokesperson, the women in blue together with their male counterparts started out by raiding the liquor outlets. They then conducted compliance inspections and raised safety awareness among patrons, especially vulnerable women.

She said by 9pm, members had already visited six liquor outlets around Westonaria.

“Seven fines amounting to R12 100 were issued for non-compliance. One shebeen in Borwa Westonaria was also visited, and the owner was fined R1 500 for selling liquor without a licence. The liquor was confiscated and two heavily intoxicated patrons were removed from the premises for their safety.”

Sefara added that the second phase of the operation was held in Bekkersdal where eight liquor outlets were visited.

“Two shebeens were closed down for non compliance with the Liquor Act 59 of 2003 and both were fined a total of R3 000. The liquor was also confiscated. One suspect was arrested for dealing in liquor without a liquor licence.”

In addition, three suspects were arrested for being in possession of dagga, five heavily intoxicated patrons were removed from the premises, and all the liquor was confiscated.

“All those arrested are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.
