Almost 400 arrested in West Rand weekend crime blitz

Police and other stakeholders arrested 389 suspects during a weekend crime blitz on the West Rand.

Almost 400 people were arrested during joint operations held by police in the West Rand district, government departments, external stakeholders and other law enforcers during the weekend.

Gloria Maswanganye, the West Rand District Police spokesperson said Operation O kae Molao was led by Brigadier Mashadi Selepe, the West Rand District Vispol commander. A major part of the operation was focused on illegal mining in and around Randfontein and Krugersdorp. A total of 389 suspects were arrested.

“Among those arrested were undocumented foreign nationals, while others were arrested for bribery and possession of equipment used in illegal mining activities. Gold-bearing materials were also confiscated.

“A number of other suspects were also arrested for serious crimes, including rape, robberies, pointing of a firearm, possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of stolen property, possession of dangerous weapons, drunken driving, reckless and negligent driving, possession of drugs (dagga and nyaope), malicious damage to property, theft, assault and shoplifting.”

Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police commissioner commended all the teams’ respective members on their tireless efforts to prevent crime.

He also extended his appreciation to the community at large for their commitment in working hand in hand with the police.
