You know you’re from R’fontein when …

There is no place like Randfontein.

Randfontein is a strange yet wonderful place. Some things happen in this small town that makes it an unforgettable place to live in.

Although some things may annoy residents, they always seem to find a way to laugh about it afterwards. From seeing baboons roaming the streets to driving skills development because of the bad road conditions, residents always know exactly when they are home.

There are some noteworthy characteristics of the town that immediately lets its 149 286 residents know that they are home. These are the pointers that residents use to know that they are home.

You know you’re in Randfontein when:

• The street in front of your house looks like the surface of the moon (because of all the potholes).

• You’ve phoned the Herald at least once to do a story about potholes.

• You’ve memorised where each pothole is.

• You start giving directions by saying, “You know that huge pothole at the tall tree…”

• You can smell that you are back in town. It’s either the smell of sewage or the smell of something burning.

• You pass at least three stalls selling boerewors on a Saturday.

• If you’re looking for someone, all you have to do is go to Spur on a Friday night.

• The electricity goes off and you check the neighbors house to see if it’s load shedding.

• The electricity goes off and you don’t check your electricity box, you just get the candles.

• You see people wearing shorts in winter.

• You know at least one oom Sarel, one oom Piet, and one oom Dirk.

• You wash your car and by the time you get home it’s already covered in dust.

• It rains and you’re too scared to drive though a puddle because it might be a pothole.

• You start saving towards the Randfontein Show a year before it happens.

• You’ve met Roy Harris in person.
