Mandela Day 2019: Municipality, Herald and more to go big this Mandela Day!

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) have revealed big plans for Mandela Day this Thursday, 18 July.

Sphiwe Mathumbo, a supervisor at RWCLM confirmed those to benefit from a planned clean-up are the Rand West SPCA and the Life Esidimeni Recovery Centre, both situated in the Rand West City region. In addition, the gravel road leading to the SPCA offices will be graded, shrubs and bushes will be pruned at both the organisations and the refuse removed, while the Recovery Centre will be painted.

“Our outreach programme for this year’s Mandela Day celebrations is a collaborative effort that includes various stakeholders, including Vine Leaf Networks, Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Recreation and Culture, SPCA, Life Esidimeni Recovery Centre, the Herald and other local organisations that will be confirmed at a later stage.”

He said the objectives of the programme are as follows:

• Celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela and promote the spirit of collaborative governance

• Create awareness of the great work being done by both the centres

• Rally support from communities, corporate sector and other government departments to assist the centres to achieve their goals

• Promote an active healthy lifestyle

• Address the stigma attached to rehabilitated substance abusers

• Assist with integrating rehabilitated youth into society
