Bad odour in Greenhills leaves a bad taste in residents’ mouths

Greenhills has a serious sewage spillage issue - this is what the councillor had to say.

The sewage spillage issue in Greenhills continues to leave residents displeased and their environment unpleasant.

Ellik de Lange, DA Ward 6 councillor, who attested to the problem, said he gets inundated with WhattsApp messages with pictures from residents seeking his intervention.

Despite having reported all the issues to the municipality, De Lange said not much is being done to resolve the issues.

De Lange, who met with the Herald on Kenneth Road and Elaine Avenue in Homelake, the site of another sewage spillage, said, “This spillage that runs down to Kenneth Road causes a bad odour,” the councillor said.

He added that there are other similar spillages that continue to put the health of the residents at risk and make their lives miserable. He added that this is a very serious problem – not only in Ward 6, but throughout Randfontein.

De Lange said he reported the sewage spill on the corner of Kenneth Road and Elaine Avenue immediately after being informed about it, “… but, the municipality will attend to it later as they do not have enough staff and only have two trucks to service the entire town.

“This really creates a bad environment for people to live in. Pedestrians become soaked with sewage when vehicles drive through the puddles,” he said.

De Lange also said water leaks in Greenhills are among the issues that need urgent attention, but said many of those that were reported have not been attended to.
