Major R1 million copper cable bust

Five suspects were arrested in Westonaria for posession of copper cables worth R1 million.

Five men between the ages of 25 and 35 were arrested in Westonaria for being in possession of copper cables yesterday, 25 June.

According to Captain Eddie Boboko, the West Rand District Police spokesperson, Captain PJ Conradie of Westonaria’s detective unit heard a strange noise near an empty building while he was busy with his daily investigative routine duties.

“He looked over the wall and saw people inside the empty building, stripping copper cables. He immediately called for back-up, and while he was waiting, he drove around the building to the main gate, where he saw the suspects jumping over the wall. The quick response by police members led to the suspects being chased and five of them being arrested,” he said.

The copper cables recovered were estimated to be worth R1 000 000.

“The suspects were detained at the Westonaria Police Station and will appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.”

The West Rand District Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, welcomed the arrests and applauded the members for good work as copper cable theft in the West Rand District is a concern.

“We will continue to address the problem and make sure that suspects are brought to book and face the full might of the law. We are making a clarion call to the community to be active participants by providing information on any lawlessness to the police,” Kekana added.
