Three killed, two injured in ‘taxi hit’ in Westonaria

Several empty cartridge cases were found at the scene of a deadly shooting at a taxi rank last weekend – three dead, two critical.

Three people were killed and two others critically wounded when gunmen opened fire on the taxi they were travelling in at the South Shaft taxi rank in Westonaria during the weekend.

Sergeant Audrey Sefara, Westonaria Police’s spokesperson, said the incident occurred on Sunday evening, 16 June.

“Two victims were found lying outside the minibus next to the sliding door while the third victim was lying a few metres away from the minibus. Victims had gunshot wounds to the body and were declared dead by paramedics at the scene,” said Sefara.

She added that two women who had also sustained gunshot wounds were transported to hospital in a critical condition.

“Several empty cartridge cases were collected from the scene and taken to a Forensic Laboratory for further examination. Preliminary investigations revealed that the minibus returned from Lesotho to Westonaria.

“It is alleged the shooting incident took place shortly after the minibus had arrived at the taxi rank, as passengers climbed out. Two unknown men came running towards the taxi, produced firearms and started shooting at the minibus.

“The perpetrators escaped in a vehicle that had been waiting for them at the scene. It has also been alleged that some of them were seen running into a field nearby, “Sefara said.

She said at this stage, the perpetrators are still at large, but a case of murder and attempted murder has been opened and the community has been urged to come forward with any information that may help with their arrest.
