Balaclava-clad intruder on the loose

A man was surprised by an intruder armed with a firearm in his Bekkersdal home.

Bekkersdal Police have launched a manhunt for a balaclava-clad intruder who allegedly targeted a house in the Mandela informal settlement, Bekkersdal, last week.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the incident took place at about 1.30am on Thursday, 6 June.

“The victim was sleeping when a person broke into his home. He said he was awakened by someone tapping on his shoulder and then realised that the intruder – whose faced was covered – had started taking things, including the victim’s phone.

“The victim started screaming for help but the perpetrator threatened to shoot him before fleeing on foot. The victim later reported the matter to the police, where a case of house robbery was opened,” she said.
