Police talk child safety at day-care centres

Children's rights, child labour and sex exploitation, child abuse and trafficking were the focus of Randfontein Police's visit to two day-care centres recently.

Officers from the Randfontein Police Station visited two day-care cantres in Hillside and Nhongweni during last week, as part of creating awareness for National Child Protection Week.

Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, said those involved during the visit included members of the Randfontein Police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit and Youth Desk, Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP), Rand West Public Safety, and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

“At the Emhlangeni Day Care Centre in Bhongweni, we interacted and sang with 50 children while addressing safety, children’s rights, child labour and sex exploitation, child abuse and trafficking. A total of 250 informative pamphlets with safety tips and resource information were handed out.

“At the Restoration Day Care Centre in Hillside, we reached 40 children, addressing the same issues and distributed 100 informative leaflets.”
