Cash-in-transit UPDATE: Three injured as they escaped

Police shed more light on cash-in-transit heist in Kocksoord during the weekend.

Police say they will not rest until they find the perpetrators responsible for a cash-in-transit heist and hijacking that left three women injured as they made their escape in Kocksoord this past weekend.

At about 7am on Saturday, 1 June, a cash-in-transit van was targeted at the corner of Steyn Road and Market Street in Kocksoord. The Herald initially reported that the incident took place in the Ten Acres area but Constable Gloria Maswanganyi, the West Rand District police spokesperson advised that this is not the case.

She said they are investigating a case of armed robbery and that a G4 Security van was targeted as they dropped off cash at a post office that morning.

“One of the security guards was carrying the money box and entered the post office when an armed perpetrator threatened him with a firearm. He ordered the guard to drop the money box. The perpetrator then took the money box, plus the guard’s firearm and live ammunition.

“The perpetrator then joined his accomplice, who was driving a white BMW. The money box exploded when the perpetrators tried to open it, apparently damaging the BMW. The perpetrators then abandoned their vehicle and hijacked a silver Toyota Tazz, allegedly occupied by three people. The thugs then left the scene in the hijacked Toyota Tazz with an undisclosed amount of cash. The Tazz was, however, recovered later, about 2km away from the scene. The suspect(s) are, however, still at large,” she warned.

“We are appealing to the community to come forward with any information they might have that will assist the police in tracking down and arresting the suspects.”

She said the Randfontein Police can be contacted on 011 767 2350, or through the Crimestop number 08600 10111.

Shawn Herbst, a Netcare 911 spokesperson, added that they arrived on the scene shortly before 9am.

“Reports from the scene indicated that three adult females were injured when they were hijacked by the suspects, who were trying to escape. The patients were assessed on scene and found to be stable. They declined ambulance transportation to hospital.”
