‘We are your friends’ – R’fontein Police to kids

Randfontein Police visited a Toekies school to mark National Child Protection Week (CPW). Numerous topics were discussed on the day.

The Randfontein Police along with its Victim Empowerment Centre and Rand West Public Safety visited the Isabella Day Care Centre in Toekomsrus on Monday, 27 May to mark National Child Protection Week (CPW).

According to the South Government website, CPW is observed in South Africa annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005. The campaign began in 1997 and it aims to mobilise all sectors of society to ensure that children and cared for and protected.

Police officers engage with children about child protection.

“We interacted with 80 children about their safety. We have taught them what is right and what is wrong, and about the importance of respecting their bodies and reporting anything wrong being done by their parents or teachers.

“Learners were also taught that police are there to protect and serve them. We do not want them to be scared of us because we are their friends,” Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson explained.
