Hiker bust with drugs on N12

A 33-year-old man was arrested for possession of drugs after he was found hiking on the N12.

A 33-year-old male hiker has been arrested for being in possession of drugs on the N12.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, confirmed that the man, who is from Potchefstroom, was arrested shortly after noon on Thursday, 30 May.

According to Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police N12 Unit was conducting a stop-and-search crime prevention operation along the N12.

“Constables Stanley Lavhelani, Jeffrey Manganyi and Thumeka Ntlobe were patrolling along the N12 when they spotted a man standing at the hiking spot from Johannesburg to Potchefstroom. They approached him and asked to search him and his bag. Inside the bag, the constables found a black plastic bag,” she said.

“They opened the bag and discovered a quantity of drugs. The hiker was immediately placed under arrest. He will be charged with possession of drugs and is expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon,” she added.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, commended the members for the arrest, and said stop-and-search operations remain a good crime prevention practice.

“Criminals are within our communities and it remains our responsibility to root them out,” he concluded.
