Influenza, more commonly known as the flu, is one of the infectious diseases many will suffer from during the winter season, but with just a little luck and knowledge, you can avoid it.

For this week’s #WisdomWednesday, the Herald sought advice from Life Robinson Private Hospital’s Infection Prevention experts on how we can stay flu-free or illness-free this winter season.

Annette de Wit, Infection Prevention Coordinator and Christelle Rautenbach, Infection Prevention Specialist, gave tips on how people can avoid contracting the disease.

Annette and Christelle also gave some additional tips to help the fight the flu:

• Get vaccinated

• Wash your hands often

• Cover your mouth when coughing and stay home when you are sick

In order to stop the spread of germs, both agreed that it is important to cough or sneeze into your upper arm area and not into your hands.

“Also, put your used tissues in the waste bin, clean your hands after coughing or sneezing and wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand cleaner,” Annette said.
