#HelpOurTownShineAgain: The town has spoken

Are you in? The Herald’s clean-up project, #HelpOurTownShineAgain, will continue on 1 June in Greenhills.

The town has spoken.

Sharpen your litter picker, clear your schedule for at least two hours and get some old clothes ready, because the next clean-up is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 1 June, with Greenhills having been identified as the area which desperately needs cleaning up.

As many of you know, the Herald’s clean-up project, #HelpOurTownShineAgain, kicked off with a clean-up in Randgate in April. It was the first of many to come.

Clinton Botha, the Herald editor,

We asked community members to let us know where the problem areas are so that we can target a different area every month, and the response was outstanding. Thanks to the Randfontein Publicity Association (RPA) and residents of the town, a number of areas as well as a date for the clean-up have been proposed and chosen.

According to Clinton Botha, the Herald editor, “We will gather at the RPA office inside the Greenhills Sport Stadium and make our way through the main streets, which include Greenhills Avenue, Homestead Avenue, Kenneth Road and North Way Road. Should sufficient manpower be available, we will even tackle adjacent streets and roads.

“We thank everyone for their input, assistance and willingness to take part in this project. I can guarantee you that all areas will eventually be targeted. Everyone is invited, so please do come in large numbers and lets us know how you can assist on the day. We will start at 7.30am and should be done by about 10am.”

Joy Hamann, RPA publicity officer added, “We suggest that those taking part bring their own rubber gloves as the disposable ones do not last very long. However, gloves and bags will be distributed on the day.

“People should stop complaining, get involved and help make a difference. If everyone does a little bit, it will make a big difference. We have to take pride in our town and do our bit to put an end to this terrible litter problem. We need to appeal to Randfontein residents to stop throwing their litter everywhere but in the dustbin. It’s all too easy and highly irresponsible to dump refuse illegally. From now on municipal officials will be notified of illegal dumping.”
