#MunicipalMonday: Blocked drain causes a stink at Randgate home

VIDEO: In this week's #Municipal Monday, the Herald met with a Randgate resident who showed us the mess in his yard after simply draining his bath.

A family in Randgate said that since January this year, they have not had the pleasure of using their bathroom facilities properly.

Due to a drain that has been clogged for nearly six months, the family said flushing a toilet or draining a bath can lead to their yard flooding with sewage.

According to Koos Diederiks, the family has lived in the house for 15 years. He said, “I reached out to the municipality, but the one person they sent brought the wrong the equipment. They needed to blow the mess out, to clear out the sewage.

“This is an old house with a different system, so specific equipment is needed for the job. At the time, they said the equipment was somewhere else, and they would come back, but that was the only time we ever saw them,” Koos said.

Koos said the family cannot not use the toilet in the house, instead they use the one outside. “Even after bathing, you have to use a bucket to carry the water outside.”

As soon as the residents drain a bath, sewage begins flowing into the yard.

He continued, saying that he is not only scared that his children will come into contact with some bacteria or other, but the smell of the sewage is sickening.

The blocked drain is right in front of our kitchen window and we can no longer let the children play outside.”

Koos said as someone who is dependent on odd jobs to make a living, the situation has cost him a lot of money. He’s had to cancel most of his appointments waiting for the situation to be resolved.

“I sit and wait all day, but no one shows up. We have been living like this for nearly six months, and can no longer go on like this. We are becoming seriously worried about our health,” he added.
