DANGER: Trench on Lazar Avenue

There is a deep trench on Lazar Avenue in the Wheatlands area that poses a danger to motorists.

Steve Campbell, a Wheatlands resident, fears for the safety of motorists on Lazar Avenue.

For over two years, Steve has been highly concerned about the condition of Lazar Avenue, more specifically, the big trench outside his property in Wheatlands, saying it poses a serious danger if not repaired properly. The risk of major vehicle damage, a person sustaining serious injuries or even loss of life is a huge possibility.

Pothole problem persists

According to Steve, the trench is approximately 45 centimetres deep and has caused many accidents already.

He said two years ago, a motorist lost control of his vehicle after running into the trench and eventually landed up in hospital.

Steve added that when he brought the matter to the attention of the municipality, a sign reading ‘potholes’ was erected but this was done in front of his property and which does not help much as it was placed a few metres away, near some of the worst potholes on the road.

“By the time motorists realise there is a pothole in the road it might be too late. That driver would have already wrecked his vehicle or possibly have driven into my yard.”

Steve also complained that when municipal workers seal the potholes they do not to it the right way.

“They just put cement in them. It just does not work. It’s OK for about seven months, but the problem never really goes away. Calling in a civil engineer is probably the only way to have the problem sorted out,” he suggested.

Steve concluded by saying his major concern is not ordinary travellers, it’s visitors making use of Lazar Avenue. They usually don’t know that it is in a bad state.
