Following the tragic death of a Mapogo A Mathamaga reaction officer while on duty early in April, the Chinese community showed its respect by handing over a cash donation to his family.

Christo Basson, 56, was fatally wounded during a business robbery in the Tarlton area on Monday morning, 8 April at about 9am on a plot on the R24 in Vlakplaas, Tarlton.

Andy Zhuang, the owner of the business where Basson tragically lost his life and Xin Zhu Li, the chairperson of the South African Chinese Community Policing Forum (CPF) based in Johannesburg visited the Mapogo offices in Randfontein on Thursday, 25 April and offered a donation as a gesture of goodwill to the fallen hero’s family.

“Christo formed part of the community as he regularly visited our business when on duty to ensure that everything was well. The Chinese community and the SA Chinese CPF therefore felt the need to conduct a fundraiser to assist the family during this difficult time,” Andy said.

The donation was handed over to Christo’s daughter, Nadia du Toit.

“We didn’t expect them to reach out to us. It means a lot to me that they want to support us because it shows that my father was good at what he did and that he didn’t die for nothing,” Nadia said.
