WATCH: Town’s clean-up project launched by the Herald in Randgate

The Herald’s community clean-up project, #HelpOurTownShineAgain was launched in Randgate on Saturday, 13 April.

Between 7am and 10am, residents, business owners and Herald employees cleaned Union Street. More than 70 bags of rubbish were collected and more than 40 people lent a helping hand.

This clean-up was just the start, and community members are urged to let the Herald know where the problem areas are so another area can be targeted each month. The Herald can be contacted at 011 693 3671 or randfonteinherald@caxton.co.za.

The businesses involved were:

• Spot on Garden Services were on the scene, helping to clean up.

• Madiba Estate Services removed branches from the pavement next to the old boxing hall earlier in the week, at the Editor’s request.

• Randgate Pharmacy sponsored disposable gloves and black bags.

• Roy Harris Estates helped clean up.

• Rand West Nissan helped clean up.

• JPL Packaging sponsored disposable gloves and black bags.

• Total Garage Randgate’s owner (who also happens to be a Director of the Publicity Association) helped pick up and also provided his bakkie for removal of bags. A couple of his employees also assisted.

• Emshir Contractors supplied a bakkie to cart the bags away. This anonymous helper is a member of the Gemeente van Christus, which is near the library and was extremely grateful for the clean-up. He only arranged the bakkie when he saw what we were all doing – he did not know the clean-up was going to take place. He told us they have been trying to get the place cleaned up for a long time. He also told us about the drinking in public and drug deals that go down next to the library.

• A member of the CPF and a captain from the police were at the Library for a while to keep an eye on us, as that area is particularly well-known for drug deals etc.
