Plan to curb crime in the West

AfriForum announces plan to curb crime in the West Rand.

Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s head of community safety for the northern region, has encouraged communities to join safety institutions and prioritise their own safety.

Nehemiah, AfriForum’s project against violent crime, was launched on the West Rand and intensified through membership training.

As part of the Nehemiah project, the West Rand neighbourhood watches completed various safety modules to support the community during the weekend of 6 and 7 March. The aim of this project is to curb crime on the West Rand. Modules included command and control, area protection, home protection and functioning of intelligence.

“This weekend’s training is one of the most important steps in ensuring a safer community. The modules are specifically aimed at proactively mobilising communities to prevent crime, rather than reacting to past situations,” said Dewet Ungerer, assistant coordinator for AfriForum West Rand.

According to Dewet, training for communities will be continuously available. The recent weekend’s training was just the beginning of helping communities to prevent crime from taking over everyday life.

Hillel said, “Training in a variety of fields can enable communities to act more effectively within the framework of legislation and make their communities easier to defend.”
