A representative of a local non-profit organisation that is taking a stand against human trafficking recently spoke about the issue on national television.
Glory Matipile, the General Secretary and founder of Baagi Ba South Africa in Mohlakeng, was a guest on Expressions, an SABC show, on 9 April.
“The topic was ‘Is South Africa failing to curb human trafficking?’ and we talked about how human trafficking is affecting our youth, and how syndicates get away with it and our government is doing nothing about it,” she said.
Baagi Ba is actively campaigning against human trafficking and is working with local authorities to get victims of this crime back to their home country.
“During the show, I focused on the lack of safety and security in our country and how our South African youth, who were exploited, are forgotten in foreign jails and how the government has turned its back on them, refusing to sign the transfer agreement.”
According to Glory, rural areas are targeted most and she warned that syndicates recruit unsuspecting victims using job advertisements.
“The experience [of being interviewed] was awesome and I thank God that I was given an opportunity like this. Being on national television is incredibly nerve-wracking but at the same time, it’s a good feeling knowing that you are educating the world,” Glory added.
