Road closed due to 350 ton, 65 metre-long abnormal load

This abnormal load of 350 tons is said to be the biggest one that Randfontein's roads have seen to date.

Parts of the R28 and R559 have been closed due to an abnormal load vehicle which is making its way through Randfontein from the N12.

This load is possibly the biggest one seen on Randfontein’s roads to date.

“The load’s weight is 350 tons and it’s 65 metres long. The width is 7,7 meters, and the roads have had to be closed for it because of its width,” Adriaan Scholtz from Superloads Consultants said.

Adriaan said that the abnormal load is carrying mine equipment from Vanderbijlpark. He is in charge of getting the load safely to Brits.

“We weren’t able to drive through town so we drove through Middelvlei, around the town. We made sure that this load doesn’t pose any risk to other road users as we are escorted by police and traffic officers. We have taken many precautions and we are in contact with all relevant parties to make sure that the road is safe for everyone,” he added.

“If everything goes well, three more abnormal loads like these will come through Randfontein in the next three months.”

He said that this abnormal load has affected traffic flow as it is moving very slow. Marius Janse van Rensburg of the Rand West City Local Municipality’s electrical planning department also escorted the abnormal load through Randfontein to make sure that there were no electrical cables in its way, as it is 8 meters high.
