Family day for diabetes awareness in Randfontein

Diabetes awareness campaign to be held by Kaya FM's Pitso Molemane at the Greenhills Stadium on Saturday, 7 April.

A diabetes awareness campaign will be held by Kaya FM’s Pitso Molemane at the Greenhills Stadium on Saturday, 7 April.

Pitso is a diabetes sufferer.

“I have lived with this condition for three decades as I was diagnosed with Type 1 or Juvenile Diabetes at a tender age. I am proud to say I am doing 33 years with the disease. I am insulin dependent,” Pitso said.

Throughout the years, Pisto said, he has been giving people tips about the best course of action that they can follow to live longer.

“This has been through social media, where I answer people’s questions posed directly to me, as well people calling me. Last year I was approached by radio legend ntate Thuso Motaung to partner with his show Makhulong A Matalaon SABC radio station, Lesedi FM. Every Sunday I join ntate Thuso and we dedicate part of the show to diabetes. The response from the more than two million listeners is so overwhelming.

“I am excited to share with you that I am launching the first-ever diabetes prevention initiative.

I am raising awareness about diabetes following the latest research revealing that more than five million South Africans are pre-diabetes and sadly they are not aware of it. This figure is in addition to the more than 3,5 million people living with diabetes.

Pitso said during the family event people can participate in a 10km race. There will also be a 5km fun walk for the kids and the elderly.

“Medical practitioners will give talks on healthy eating and diet. People will be spoilt for choice as a variety of health screenings will be done,” Pisto said.
