Working on Fire (WoF) Programme in cooperation with the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) is helping youngsters to prepare for future opportunities.

WoF is an expanded public works programme funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs. The programme’s Siphokazi Mboyiya of Carletonville said that structural firefighting courses at WRDM made her employable.

“I have a Basic Ambulance Assistant certificate in my folder,” she boasted.

“These courses will add weight to my curriculum vitae. Upskilling is the only way forward. Fortunately, we are able to utilise the stipend to do courses,’’ Siphokazi said.

‘‘I am formally applying for positions because I have formal training in ambulance services and structural firefighting. It is our responsibility as firefighters to fight our way up and out,’’ she said.

She also completed her code 10 drivers’ licence.

Andre Marx, principal of the WRDM Training Academy said that it is his pleasure to help sharpen and develop their skills.

I will be happy to employ some of the WoF firefighters into structural firefighting teams here in the region,” he said.

Stephen Boyes, General Manager for WoF in Gauteng said that high-angle rescue, search and rescue are critical in saving lives. These are some of the focus areas of the courses.

‘‘We applaud WRDM for training these inspirational and aspirant young people,’’ he concluded.
