The West Rand Retired Teachers’ Association commemorated Human Rights Day on Wednesday, 20 March at Our Lady of Africa Roman Catholic Church in Mohlakeng.
The aim was to keep the legacy of the day alive.
Zachariah Lekgatle, chairperson of the association said commemorating the day will teach many young people where the country comes from historically.
“We are doing this so that we do not forget where we come from, because if we sit and do nothing about it, it will soon be out of our minds. This will mean the pain and suffering endured on the day would be for nothing,” Zachariah said.
He added that like many other public holidays on the South African calendar, Human Rights Day is one of the most important.
“We had various speakers who gave insightful speeches about human rights and educated us about how we should respect each other’s rights. People must never forget that on this particular day there were people who died for their very own human rights that were violated by an oppressive administration,” Zachariah said.
During his sermon, Reverend Dr Phinda Ngwenya said it is very important for everyone to learn and know what their basic human rights are.
“Discrimination should also be eradicated among the people,” he said.
