An investigation has been launched into the deadly accident that claimed the lives of 13 people in Westonaria during the weekend.

Thirteen people, among them children, were killed, and nine others injured in a horrific crash between a bakkie and a light motor vehicle on the N12 between Fochville and Westonaria on Sunday night, 17 March.

Horror N12 crash: 13 dead, nine injured

Captain Eddie Boboko, West Rand District Police spokesperson confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

He added that the accident occurred at about 7.50pm on the N12 near Shaft 8 in Westonaria.

“Two vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and Toyota Hilux double cab, were involved in the accident. The investigation revealed that the Toyota Corolla was driving on the N12 from Pretoria to Bloemhof while the Toyota Hilux was travelling from Fochville on the N12 towards Soweto when the accident took place,” he said.

According to Boboko, the two vehicles collided, leaving four passengers and the driver trapped inside the car. All five of the occupantsof the car, as well as seven passengers in the bakkie, died on the scene.

“Two other passengers were airlifted from the scene of the accident to Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital and Sunshine Hospital in Benoni. Seven other injured passengers were transported to Carletonville Hospital by different emergency services. One of the passengers succumbed to his/ her injuries at the Carletonville Hospital,” Boboko said.

Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson said their paramedics along with other medical services arrived at the accident scene where they found the vehicles that had sustained a considerable amount of damage.

“Numerous bodies were scattered around the scene,” Meiring said.

The investigation continues to identify all the passengers and drivers as well as the cause of the accident.

Major General Fred Kekana, West Rand Police District commander, attended the accident scene and sends his condolences to all the families of the victims involved. He also thanked all the emergency services, police members and traffic officers for the quick response and handling the scene in a professional manner.

He further advised motorists driving on the N12 to drive at the required speed limit and not to overload their vehicles as the area is dark and needs more concentration from the drivers.
