Toekies Business Hive still not operational

An oversight inspection was conducted at the Toekies Business Hive to determine the reasons why it is still not being utilised by residents.

Solly Msimanga, DA Gauteng Premier candidate conducted an oversight inspection at the non-functional Toekomsrus Business Hive on Monday, 18 March.

The inspection followed the discovery that the facility has not been functional for a period of time without any explanation.

Charity Moyo, DA Gauteng Premier campaign media officer said in a statement, “The Toekomsrus Business Hive is part of Premier David Makhura’s Western Corridor which is a key aspect of his transformation, modernisation and re-industrialisation programme meant to grow the township economy. This business hub was renovated in the 2016/ 17 financial year at a cost of more than R3 million and handed over to the West Rand District Municipality to take control of and to oversee the day to day running of this hub.”

But, Jacques Julius, DA member of Parliament explained to the Herald during the inspection that the facility was closed as soon as it was renovated. He added that the reason for their inspection was to assess this facility and determine why it is still not being utilised by the residents.

“The facility that should be empowering the locals economically is now robbing them of such an opportunity. We have asked questions and sent an email to the mayor, asking how much was spent on this facility, why is it not being used, and will it be fully functional and accessible to the community to start their businesses,” Julius explained.

Msimanga said the other issue was that the owners of businesses that used to operate from there thought they would be able to use the facility again after the renovations were completed, but unfortunately not.

“One of the young men that we met here had been running a successful business for 10 years. He was told to vacate the facility for renovation purposes, and when he tried to return he was denied access,” Msimang.

One of the local business owners, Alta Johnson, said she has been denied use of the facility and that the entire situation is affecting her business.

“The last time we complained they told us that certain things had not been signed off. We are not even allowed to advertise. I can only see my clients on weekends, but there is not much I can do to change it,” Johnson said.
