#WisdomWednesday: Focus on child sexual abuse

VIDEO: The Herald took a look at child sexual abuse and spoke to Monique Strydom, CEO of Matla A Bana, an NGO that voices children's rights.

Many children are vulnerable, some may even be taken advantage of, or fall victim to various forms of abuse.

For this week’s #WisdomWednesday, the Herald took a look at the child sexual abuse issue and spoke to Monique Strydom, CEO of Matla A Bana, an NGO that voices children’s rights.

According to Monique, a child is sexually abused every four minutes. She said girls aged between 8 and 12 tend to be victims of sexual abuse, and most of the time, the children know their abusers.

“It is very important to go straight to the police whenever a child indicates that there is something wrong,” Monique added.

She also said that in order to fight sexual abuse, communities must educate children about it, so that they can quickly speak out against it.
