Security workers demand salaries

Alleged unpaid security officers working at various clinics in Randfontein ask: How must we safeguard facilities with no pay?

Workers of Eradicate Security Services have alleged that they have not been paid since they started working for the company in December last year.

Several of them work at various clinics around Randfontein.

For two months, workers said they have had to take out loans to survive as they had no other means to pay for rent and support their families.

David Chaba, 52, who was stationed at the Toekomsrus Clinic, said that since he started working for the company, he has not received a single cent of his salary.

“We were told the Health Department had not paid the company,” Chaba said.

He added the situation has put unnecessary strain on his relationship with his family and that no one believes him.

“They see me go to work, but they are complaining that I return without getting paid.”

Chaba added he has not been able to provide for his child and has not been able to pay municipal bills for his Mohlakeng home.

He said he tried several times to plead with management of the company, but, “All they ever ask for is my banking details. At the end of the day, nothing happens.”

Samuel Qaki, 35, who started working for the company on 7 January this year said he was promised to be paid at end of the month but, “We were told that there was a delay from the Health Department, and that we would be paid on 15 January,” Qaki said.

He said on top of that, disgruntled workers were instructed to continue reporting for duty.

“We did so, so that we could safeguard the public facilities,” Qaki added.

Qaki, who said he originates from Bloemfontein, said he needs to pay rent and has a lot of debt to pay as he had to borrow money.

“There were many of our employees who gave up, and simply quit working. These were people who had families to feed and were very desperate to get their salaries, but at the end they just gave up.”

Responding to the workers’ claims, Kerzner Gololo, the Chief Operations Officer and owner of Eradicate Security Services said, “I am not going to answer to that, Sir. If there is anything, I am sure they know the relevant channels to direct their complaints. And then first of all, the best solution is to contact me; if not, they can can contact one of the supervisors who are on site.”
