The family of a motorcyclist fear he may lose his leg following Tuesday afternoon’s serious crash with a vehicle on the pothole-infested Condor Drive in Finsbury.
Shawn Herbst, Netcare 911 spokesperson confirmed that at about 2.13pm on Tuesday, 19 February a light motor vehicle and a motorcycle were involved in a collision that left the adult motorcyclist with serious injuries.

“He was provided with advanced life support interventions and once stabilised he was transported to hospital for further treatment.”
Bunita Bester, the daughter of the injured motorcyclist confirmed to the Herald on Wednesday morning, 20 February that her father whom she identified as Jannie Janse van Vuuren is still in a critical condition.
“My whole family is in shock about the accident. My dad is in Leratong Hospital at the moment but they informed us this morning that he will be transferred to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Hospital staff also told us that they weren’t sure whether they would be able to save his leg that was severely injured in the accident,” she said.
According to Finsbury resident Bokkie Pule who was one of the first people on scene, she knows the driver of the vehicle and stopped immediately to help when she recognised him.
“It was just a matter of time before an accident like this would occur on this dangerous road. On 30 January the residents of Finsbury protested about the condition of this road due to the lack of service delivery, but the council has done nothing. Now, this pothole-infested road has claimed its first victims,” she said.
Although the exact cause of the accident is still to be investigated, Pule said both the vehicle driver and motorcyclist swerved to avoid the potholes.
Thulani Ratona, the driver of the vehicle told the Herald on scene that he was on his way to pick up his children at school when the accident occurred.
“I got such a fright as this was the first accident I’ve ever been in. I’m just worried about the motorcyclist. Soon after the accident I took off my shirt to tie up his leg but I wish I could do more to help him.”
Residents have meanwhile expressed their anger about the pothole-infested Condor Drive where the accident occurred as well as other roads in town that remain a major concern.
