Young chef student off to cook in Durban

Adriaan Jacobs from Westcol will be taking on a cooking challenge in Durban from 21 to 26 February.

For the past two years, Adriaan Jacobs has been cooking up a storm in his kitchen while preparing for the National World Skills Competition to be held from 21 to 26 February at the Durban Convention Centre.

This comes after Adriaan, 21, who is studying towards his N5 Certificate in Hospitality Service and a Diploma in Culinary Arts at Westcol, took second place in the provincial competition in November last year.

Adriaan Jacobs will represent Westcol and Gauteng at the cooking competition at the Durban Convention Centre.

Speaking about representing both Westcol and Gauteng, Adrian said he was grateful and honoured for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

In the last two years, he said, he had to refine some of his menus for the competition, which required extra time and effort.

“I practised a lot at home; in addition to studying. My mentor also put in a lot of extra work,” Adriaan said.

Maritjie Scholtz, Adriaan’s mentor and Culinary Arts expert said the competition is for young people under the age of 22. One contestant will get the opportunity to represent South Africa at the World Skills International Competition in Kazan, Russia between 22 and 27 August 2019.

“The competition is really about skills and promoting the hospitality industry. Day 1 is all about hygiene and making their own pasta by hand. On Day 2, they have to prepare a three-course meal, clean up and be out within three hours,” Maritjie said.

She said every two years groups of talented young people from around the world accompanied by their teachers, coaches and mentors gather in a selected city to compete before the public to test themselves on international hospitality standards.

Westcol management also wished Adriaan and Marijtie well with the competition.
