Police make 173 weekend arrests

Nearly 180 arrested by police on the West Rand in weekend crackdown.

A total of 174 arrests were made during various crime-prevention operations conducted by the West Rand Cluster Police this past weekend.

“Arrests made range from fraud, aiding the suspect to escape, armed robbery, housebreaking and theft, common robbery, business burglary, assaults, use of motor vehicle without owner’s consent, theft and malicious damage to property. There were also Trio cases such as truck hijacking, house robbery, contempt of court order and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm,” confirmed Captain Raymond Sebonyane, the West Rand Cluster Police spokesperson.

Various crimes were addressed during the operations, which mainly focused on day-to-day crimes such as possession of drugs, driving while under the influence of alcohol, dealing in liquor without a licence, possession of suspected stolen goods, possession of drugs, possession of hijacked motor vehicle and vehicles, drinking in public, drunk and disorderly, possession of dangerous weapon and undocumented person.

“All arrested suspects will appear in various courts in the Cluster soon,” he said.

These successes were achieved mostly by combined operations throughout the district. Police members and other law-enforcement agencies flooded the streets to create safer areas for the surrounding communities.

Major General Fred Kekane, the West Rand District Commander thanked all the members for their hard work.
