A woman was shot when a group of armed men attacked the vehicle she was travelling in on a bridge in Simunye during the early hours of Thursday last week.
Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the incident occurred at about 3am on Thursday, 7 February and that they are investigating a case of attempted murder as well as malicious damage to property.
“It is alleged three people were on their way to work and, according to the driver, when they came to a speed hump on the bridge, a group of six men wearing balaclavas ambushed them. The group started firing shots and throwing stones at the moving vehicle.
“The driver continued driving, but then realised that one of his passengers had been shot and needed to be admitted to hospital,” she said.
She added that the suspects are still at large and police are doing everything in their power to close the case.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, urged the public to be vigilant when making use of new routes to Simunye, especially at night or during the early hours of the morning.
“We have intensified our patrols along these routes and those who are committing these crimes will be brought to book,” Swart vowed.
