West Rand radio station joins fight on crime

Police called for all in Randfontein to stand together against crime via West Rand-based radio station.

The Randfontein Police recently visited Rainbow FM in Roodepoort to raise awareness about crime and encourage community involvement.

According to Constable Carmen Hendricks, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, she and Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander, as well as Pastor Vernon Bezuidenhout, visited the West Rand-based radio station to raise certain crime-related issues within the Randfontein community.

“Issues that were raised include house robberies, theft of motor vehicles and alcohol abuse that leads to domestic violence. Housebreakings, drunk driving, murders and other crimes in the area were also addressed. We also focused on helping the elderly who are easy targets for criminals,” Hendricks said.

Pastor Vernon also raised awareness for their Divine Intervention event. It is an event where pastors get together with the police and community members to pray for all the surrounding areas.

“We focused on the Divine Intervention specifically for our youth, so that they can become more involved in the community instead of committing crimes,” he said.

Hendricks added that the police’s main focus is to combat crime with the help of the community.

“The community members need to work with the police and participate in Community Policing Forums in their areas,” she said.

“We need more eyes and ears, because the community suffers a lot, not because of the silence of bad people, but because of the silence of good people. We encourage the public to come forward if they see any suspicious activities and to contact the police on the Crime Stop number, 08600 10111, or to SMS the Crime Line on 32211 to report crime anonymously,” Hendricks concluded.
