Government reaches out to the needy in R’fontein

Hundreds of households in Mohlakeng and smallholdings in Randfontein, benefited from a food distribution initiative by the Gauteng government.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development through West Rand Food Bank distributed food parcels to disadvantaged families in Randfontein during the past week.

According to the media statement released by Sibusiso Chauke, Communication Officer: Media Liaison and Strategy for the Gauteng Department of Social Development, “This initiative is continuing until 31 January 2019 throughout the West Rand Region.

“On Tuesday food parcels were distributed to 350 households in Mohlakeng Extension 11. On Wednesday 250 households were reached in Mohlakeng Extension 7 followed by Plot 74 Randfontein and 150 households benefited on Thursday.”

He added that the food parcels assist families without any income and those who do not earn enough to meet their basic needs.

“One of the department’s objectives is to fight inequality and to eradicate poverty in our society as categorically enshrined in the Constitution of the country. Profiling was conducted in the area whereby families were interviewed and assessed to determine whether they qualified or not, and some were identified through referrals from stakeholders such as teachers, community leaders and social workers.”

One of the beneficiaries who is a qualified diesel and petrol mechanic, Robert van Tonder, 30, expressed his gratitude during the distribution in Plot 74 Randfontein.

“I am very grateful to the Gauteng government for taking care of us. I am unemployed and live in a shack. I make ends meets through piece jobs. I wish they can continue with social relief initiatives, especially job creation. The little they gave will really make a difference in our lives,” he said.
