Gold producer invests in SA’s young minds

Sibanye-Stillwater gave away 10 bursaries to 10 deserving and top learners from the Free State, North West as well as the Rand West area

Based on the recently released matric results, Sibanye-Stillwater gave away 10 bursaries to 10 deserving and top learners.

The bursary handover took place at the Sibanye-Stillwater Academy in Westonaria on Thursday, 24 January.

Thabisile Phumo, Senior Vice President of Stakeholder Relations for Sibanye-Stillwater said that it’s an honour to be able to do this for the first time. They chose the top matric learners of 2018 from disadvantaged schools in the regions in which they operate to receive the bursaries.

“We are sponsoring learners from the Free State, North West as well as the Rand West area. They have received all-inclusive bursaries to attend various top universities in the country, such as the University of the Witwatersrand, University of Johannesburg and University of Pretoria.

They are free to study whatever interests them,” Thabisile said.

“We would like to recognise their hard work and achievements. Some of these learners were part of our high school programmes and it shows that the programmes do make a difference,” she said.

Sibanye-Stillwater wished to give back to their communities by investing in young minds. Thabisile said that given the country’s economic outlook, it is vital that a company like Sibanye-Stillwater continues to serve its communities and roll out activities with community upliftment as their goal.

“We hope that once they complete their studies they will become employees of Sibanye but, no matter where they end up, I know that they will be successful. We are very proud of each learner and by applying themselves throughout their studies they will get the results that will unlock their futures,” she added.
