Break-ins on the increase in Bekkersdal, Simunye – Police

Police warn about an increase in burglaries at homes in Bekkersdal and Simunye.

Burglaries at residential premises are on the increase in Bekkersdal and Simunye, local police warned.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, “We have noted with concern an increase in the number of cases regarding break-ins at residential premises during which appliances – plasma TVs in particular – are stolen.

“Victims are usually approached by a group of three to four men in a white sedan pretending to be collecting CVs from job seekers.

They would then offer to take the victims to an internet café to print their CVs. Later they would leave them there and go to their victims’ homes and steal from them,” Lefakane said.

When the victims return home, they find that their possessions were stolen. Often their neighbours tell them that they have seen the same white sedan near their home.

“By then, the suspects would be gone without a trace. We are appealing to the public to be vigilant and report suspicious vehicles parked in their residential areas,” Lefakane added.

Anyone who can assist with information is requested to contact the Bekkersdal Police on 011 755 8040 or 072 561 8502. Alternatively contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or send an anonymous SMS to 32211.
