R’fontein dumping site is safe and clean again

The municipality has finally appointed a private contractor and security team to make sure the dumping site is clean and safe.

R’fonteiners are encouraged to make use of the designated dumping site as it is not unkempt and unsafe any more.

DA councillors Alwyn van Tonder and Gerhard Kruger took the Herald to the formerly crime-ridden dumping site which was once covered in heaps of rubbish.

The Herald has reported on the mess and the crimes in and around the dumping site many times over the years, but eventually the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) appointed a private contractor and security team to make sure the dumping site is clean and safe.

“We experienced a lot of issues regarding illegal dumping as a result of the bad conditions at the dumping site.

Randfonteiners are still dumping their rubbish on open properties all over town. Some residents are too scared to come into the dumping site to dump their rubbish so they do it next to the road a few hundred metres before you get to the gate,” Kruger said.

Van Tonder encouraged the community to go to the dumping site and see the change for themselves.

“The municipality is working hard to get the dumping site up to standard and at the moment it is safe and tidy. They still need to get the weighbridge working but it is part of the process. Community members should stop illegally dumping in and around town and make use of the dumping site once again,” he added.

There are security guards all over the dumping site and one needs to sign in to gain access. The private contractor, Khabo Kedi Waste Management, is working hard to rehabilitate and operate at the same time.
