Couple robbed at knife-point while walking

A young couple were threatened with knives during a robbery in the Bekkersdal area recently.

A young couple were recently robbed at knife-point while walking along a street in Bekkersdal.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, confirmed that the incident occurred on Metsing Street one Saturday night during the festive season.

“It is alleged an 18-year-old victim was walking with his girlfriend when they were accosted by two men armed with a knife. They allegedly demanded his cellphone and the victim complied. The suspects also requested he take off his sneakers, and then fled on foot,” Lefakane said.

She added the victim recognised one of the suspects and immediately reported the matter to the police who opened a case of robbery.

“Detective Constable John Maoba responded swiftly and followed up on the information which led to the arrest of two suspects. The victim’s sneakers were also recovered. The suspects have already appeared in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of robbery and being in possession of stolen items,” Lefakane added.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, commended the investigating officer for swiftly attending to the case and also thanked the victim for assisting the police.

“This is the kind of partnership we expect from every victim,” Swart added.
