Bekkersdal school starts new academic year with MEC

Kgothalang Secondary School started the new academic year in the presence of Gauteng MEC for Finance, Barbara Greecy.

Kgothalang Secondary School in Bekkersdal kicked off the new academic year with a surprise visit from Gauteng MEC for Finance, Barbara Creecy.

The visit was part of Gauteng’s school re-opening programme. Creecy said the Gauteng Provincial Government was out in full force to visit schools across the province and make sure everything ran smoothly.

“Traditionally I am deployed to the West Rand by the provincial executive council and I have worked in many schools across this area before. This year we are visiting Kgothalang particularly because we are pleased by the fact that the school has shown a significant improvement in their 2018 matric results.”

She added that although Kgothalang Secondary has a long and uneven history in its poor community, it has had an impact on the socio-economic environment the children find themselves in.

“It is my tradition to visit the schools at the beginning of every year to look at the problems they have, to work with them over the course of the year and to look at what we can do to support them,” Creecy said.

“So, I think this is a deserving cause since this is a no-fee school in a poor community and people are trying to do better, so by coming here we wanted to see how we could help going forward,” she added.

In her message to the learners at the start of a new academic year, Creecy said, “We need learners be in class on time. We need them to apply themselves to their studies. As you know Gauteng is the number-one performing province in the country. We want to maintain that status, and that starts on the first day of every academic year.”

With 240 matriculants at Kgothalang Secondary School, she advised the class of 2019 to attend the Senior Secondary Improvement Programme, arrive at school on time and do what their educators require of them.

“I have no doubt that they will pass and we will continue to improve the poor performance in these schools,” Creecy concluded.
