Youngsters caught breaking into R’fontein school

Bekkersdal Police arrested four young men for stealing at a local school last week.

Four men aged between 21 and 26 were arrested after being caught on CCTV stealing from a school.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said the incident occurred at Izanokhanyo Intermediate School in Simunye on New Year’s Day.

“The school caretaker noticed that there had been a break-in and reported the matter to the principal, who instructed the caretaker to view the CCTV footage.

It was discovered that the suspects were known to the caretaker,” Lefakane said.

The matter was reported to the police and a case was registered.

“Constables Gladys Mutsharini and Sisa Mengezeleli were assigned to the case. When community members informed them that the suspects were seen selling the suspected stolen items in Simunye, they pounced on them and arrested them,” Lefakane said.

She said police also found drugs and the tools used to break into the school in their possession.

“They will all be charged with business burglary and being in possession of stolen items. One of them will face an extra charge, that of being in possession of drugs. They are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.”

Colonel Tinus Swart, Bekkersdal Police station commander commended the members for their swift reaction and thanked the community for calling the police and not taking the law into their own hands.

“Investigation into this matter will continue and anyone who will be caught with the stolen property will be brought to book,” Swart said.
