Two suspects, both 21 years old were arrested by the community of the Mehlomekhulu Section in Bekkersdal after they were caught with a smartboard inside the school premises.

The incident happened in the early hours of Friday, 7 December at approximately 1.30am.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said, “It is alleged the caretaker who lives on the school premises was awoken by the sound of stones on his roof. He found two men carrying a smartboard but when they saw him, they placed it on the ground and started running in different directions.”

He managed to catch one of the men and the police were called.

“A case of business burglary was registered and the one suspect led the police to his accomplice. They will both be charged with burglary and possession of stolen property,” she added.

They are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander thanked the community for the citizen’s arrest. He also commended them for not taking the law into their own hands.
