Foreigner robbed of cellphone at knife-point

A youngster from a foreign country was threatened with a knife, and his cellphone and airtime were stolen, in the Bekkersdal area.

An 18-year-old foreign national was held up at knife-point during a robbery in the Bekkersdal area recently.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said, “The victim went to buy airtime vouchers at Thabang Cash and Carry. On his way back along Mosidi Street, he was accosted by two men armed with knives. They demanded money and his cellphone and when he told them he did not have any, they started searching him and took the airtime vouchers and his cellphone.

“The victim reported the matter to the Bekkersdal Police and a case of robbery was opened and assigned to detective Constable John Maoba. “Both suspects went on the run. Weeks after the incident, the first suspect was arrested while he was attending another case at the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court. He was charged, taken to court and denied bail on Wednesday, 5 December.

“The second suspect was also arrested while in court for another case and the cellphone was found in his possession. He will be charged with robbery and possession of stolen property.”

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, commended Constable Maoba for his dedication to his duties and the manner in which he conducted this investigation.
