Meeting turns violent: Two miners stabbed

Meeting about retrenchment and non-payment between union and mine workers almost turned deadly as two people were stabbed at the Greenhills Stadium.

Two mine workers were stabbed during a meeting held between them and the mine workers union (NUM) held at the Greenhills Stadium earlier this week. They were both taken to hospital.

Randfontein Police confirmed that the union held the meeting on Monday, 3 December with the mine workers of Sibanye Gold to address their concerns about retrenchment and unpaid wages when a fight broke out.

“Two male mine workers were stabbed and taken to hospital. A case of assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm was opened against the suspects, who are yet to be identified,” said Constable Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein police spokesperson.

Hendricks added the meeting was ended when the mine workers received threatening phone calls that made everyone disperse. No other incidents were reported after that.

“We are requesting anyone to come forward with any relevant information regarding the incident,” said Hendricks.

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander, has also expressed concern about the incident and urged unions to make sure that their members do not attend meetings while carrying weapons. He advised the members to solve problems in a civil manner.
