#MunicipalMonday – Exposed power box in Wilbotsdal a big threat

VIDEO: Residents exposed to the danger of a open power box on Johanna Street.

Wilbotsdal residents have expressed their concern about the exposed power box on Johanna Street, saying it poses a danger to not only those who live near it, but to the children of the squatter camp.

Chris van Rooyen, manager of the animal shelter where the box is located, said the power box has been without a cover for four months.

“It has been like this when we moved here four months ago. Our main concern is that the school holidays are coming up, which means that more children will be playing here. If they try to tamper with any of the wires, the consequences could be fatal,” Chris said.

Sometimes, he said, people who are up to no good switch off the power at the box. “Last time it happened while a doctor was operating on one our the animals.”

Chris said he is constantly worried that a life may be lost and he would be blamed for not reporting the problem, although he said he has done so a number of times.

“The problem is that we are not allowed to touch or do anything on the box as it is municipal property. We have called the municipality without success. We want this problem to be resolved before any lives are lost, especially those of children,” Chris added.
